A pleasant enough little hill, I suppose. The tracks through the forest bore little resemblance to the map, though. On the way up it it seemed rather straight forward. On the way down it resulted in us fighting our way through a dense pine forest. This rather than concede defeat and retrace our steps.

The top was gained quickly after the forest, along a faint path, and the large flat summit provided a grassy lunch spot, and comfort enough for a short nap.

Once off the summit and on the ridge S to the Rhinns of Kells there is the opportunity for an early decent at around 503855, down steep slopes to the huge new forest road, looking like something snaking into Mordor. Once down at the memorial (marked) it’s a trudge back to the car, but watch those unexpected new forest paths.

Don’t try and come off anywhere between 503855 and Meikle Lump; it looks all rather precipitous.

  1. “Dense” doesn’t even begin to describe it. Painfully, borderline impenetrable is more like. I was lucky to escape with my sight intact. But having said that it was preferable to retracing our steps and we did beat the elderly couple we had led astray back to the car park.

The outing was notable from my perspective for two other reasons. It was the first hill I have climbed in the southern uplands and I discovered the wonders of Avon Skin-So-Soft!
